The contraceptive implant (Nexplanon®) is now licensed for use for up to 5 years in the UK, rather than 3 years. This change is based on strong clinical evidence showing that the implant continues to provide highly effective contraception during years 4 and 5, with no new safety concerns identified. [cosrh.org]
If you currently have an implant, you may not need it replacing as early as you were previously advised. You can safely continue using it for the full 5 years, unless advised otherwise by a clinician. If you are unsure when your implant was fitted or when it needs replacing, please contact our service for advice.
